Our Studio
Bemis Studio operates out of our small farm in Olive Hill, Kentucky. We are very proud to have been juried and accepted as an “Exhibiting Member” of the Kentucky Guild of Artists & Craftsmen.
Our Team
The bulk of my work is wheel thrown. However, I couldn’t do without the help and support of my wife. She does most of the underglaze work and creates our hand built pieces. Her work tends to be decorative and colorful.
Our Vision
I would describe my work as functional art, inspired by the simple beauty of items we use in our everyday life. I strive to create pieces that will not only be appreciated visually or tactilely, but also as part of our daily lives. From our morning coffee to a formal cup of tea, or something to warm us on a cold winter’s day..
Our Glazes
Here at Bemis Studio, I develop my own glazes and colors, some are actually made with approximately 75 percent local clay, which I collect and process here on our small farm. Much of my work will include at least some of this glaze in the finished piece.
Our Palette
We are continuously testing new glazes and developing new colors. Some glazes may be retired to make room for something new. We also use oxide washes to embellish a piece or underglazes to add bright vibrant color.
Our Process
Generally, we are able to turn over new work every 3-4 weeks. This time frame is mostly due to the amount of time required for the clay to become “bone dry” before firing. The firing and glazing process often accounts for at least a week of this time.
