About Us
The Studio
Bemis Studio is run by Matt and Justine Bemis and operates out of their small farm in Olive Hill, Kentucky. Bemis Studio is very proud to have been juried and accepted as an “Exhibiting Member” of the Kentucky Guild of Artists & Craftsmen.
The Team
The bulk of Matt’s work is wheel thrown and his work is primarily functional ware that tends toward earthy tones. Matt is also currently teaching wheel throwing at Merging Rivers Pottery Studio in Russell, KY.
Justine’s specialty is hand building. She is the one with a steady hand and the patience for providing a complex mix of bright colors. She not only creates functional pieces, but some decorative ones as well.
The Vision
Their vision is to create functional art, inspired by the simple beauty of items used in everyday life. Pieces that will be appreciated visually, tactilely, and as a part of daily life. From morning coffee to a formal cup of tea, or something warming on a cold winter’s day.
The Glazes
Inspired by area history which has deep connections to local clay, Bemis Studio has developed several glazes which are actually made using local clay as the primary ingredient. This clay is collected and processed on their small farm. Much of their work will include at least some of this glaze in the finished piece.
The Process
Bemis Studio gladly accepts commissioned work and is able to turn over new work in approximately 3-4 weeks. This time frame is mostly due to the amount of time required for the clay to become “bone dry” before firing. The drying, firing, and glazing process often accounts for at least a week of this time.
